In my previous post, I had mentioned that I met the monk who helped me to understand about Buddhism and as well as singing bowl’s history and usage. But I forgot to mention his name. By the way, his name was Kalden Wangchuck. He was practicing Buddhism in Monastery located at Shree Ghal. He came to Nepal from Tibet when Chinese military attacked their monastery. He lived in the monastery from his early age. Therefore, we can assume that he began to practice Buddhism from his early childhood days.

About his physique, he was in his late 30’s with a height of approximately 5’9’’. He was a lean person, but very confident. He wore the well-pressed attire of the monks who follow Mahayana Buddhism. The color is dark yellow or dark orange in the top and maroon colored on the bottom. He had a shaved head.

It was a long conversation with him when I met him at Shree Ghal. But my thirst for the answers was not completed yet. So, I took an appointment to meet him again in order to put forward my questions. He agreed to meet me in the next week and promised me to help me out to understand or clarify my queries as far as he understands them.

Drubgon Jangchub Choeling Monastery (डुगन जाञ्चु श्रीघ: गुम्बा)

Next week, I visited him in the monastery. As I have already mentioned about the location of the monastery, it is located on the northeastern side of the Shree Ghal premises. The Shree Ghal is approximately 800 m north of Kathmandu Durbar Square. The monastery has a huge metal gate with decoration in it. At the top of the gate, there were two deer who were facing each other. As I entered the gate, there was a passage and walls of the passage was painted with Buddha. The ceiling of the passage was painted with a mandala. There was a small ground, which was paved with a stone in front of the monastery. After the passage, there was the place to light up the butter lamp on both sides. As I reached the ground, I noticed that there was a passage to make a round of the monastery. There was installed prayers wheel on the both sides of the wall. When I entered the monastery, I notice a big Buddha Statue placed far back of the room. The walls were decorated with mandalas, Buddha images, and other decorations. The tables were placed at the sides so that the visitors could walk and pay an homage to Buddha. The lamas use those tables to place the mantra book while praying the Buddha.

After a thorough visit in the prayer room, I then went to Wangchuck’s room. The room was not spacious but it was managed properly. The color of the room was a dark yellow. When I entered the room, I saw a picture of Padmasambhava and Siddhartha Gautama Buddha in the first place. The pictures were hung on the wall and below that picture was a cupboard whose height reaches the base of the pictures. Above the cupboard, there were three singing bowls of medium sized. The singing bowls were filled with water. The cupboard has transparent glass on the front. Therefore, we could see what is stored in the cupboard. Actually, there were books on Buddhism, Meditation, and Healing Therapies etc. There were some of the Buddha Statues of small sized. Left to the cupboard, there were two chairs and the opposite of that there was a wooden cupboard with a mirror in the front. To the far left of the room, there was his bed. In the middle of the room and in front of the chair there was a table. Above the table, there was glass bowl filled with fruits.

He welcomed me in the room. I sat in the chair. He offered me some fruits that were placed in the bowl. I took some pieces of grapes. While I was in the room, I felt very relaxed and my mind was very calm even though there were queries. Then, I gradually ask my queries one by one, after being comfortable. He also helped me to understand my queries clearly. He also demonstrated some of the healing techniques using a singing bowl.

My visit to the monastery was very helpful since I learned a big deal. The first one not to be forgotten is the singing bowl healing techniques. I definitely like to share on this blog and will write in the future post.
