It is well-known fact that antique singing bowls, when played, have healing capabilities. Hence, it is used in the therapeutic interventions. Most of these bowls have collected by the curators and enthusiasts. So we rarely find these bowls in the market. Even if it is found, they are very expensive. There are other singing bowls which are less expensive in comparison to the antique ones. These bowls can be categorized into brass, bronze, and the crystal made bowls. Along with these bowls, there are quite old singing bowls too.

Types of singing bowls

Singing bowls made up of brass

brass singing bowl

Brass is a metallic alloy which is made with the combination of two different metals- copper and zinc. Brass's characteristics- softness and low melting point- helps to prepare singing bowls through sand casting. In this process, brass is first molted and is poured into sand molds to form a shape of the bowl. Finally, the bowl is lathed through the machine to give a finishing touch. Another process to make the brass singing bowl is through modern manufacturing processes.

Normally, brass bowls are bright golden in color with the smooth and shiny surface but sometimes these bowls are decorated to make them unique. The decoration is usually done with etching with Tibetan symbols, mantras or Buddha images. When produces a sound, it generally sustains longer. Therefore, other cheap bells are also made of brass.

Singing bowls made up of bronze

bronze singing bowl

Bronze is a metallic alloy which is made with the combination of two different metals- copper and tin. Bronze is completely different from brass. Bronze is harder and more brittle than brass. Therefore, bronze bowls cannot be made with the same process as that of brass bowls. For bronze bowls, the only process to manufacture is hand beaten manually. First, the bronze is heated up to 1000 degree Celsius and then beaten with hammer vigorously. The heating and beating process is repeated until the desired shape is achieved.

These beautiful bowls tend to be medium to large sized. These are quite expensive in comparison to brass singing bowls because the manufacturing process requires highly skilled manpower and is labor intensive. These bowls deliver identical sound quality in regard to antique singing bowls. So this bowl is also on the wish list for many people since it is less expensive than antique ones. However, some people sell bronze bowls with an antique touch. When inexperienced importers find these bowls, they are misled and buys thinking to be the antique ones.

Singing bowls made up of crystal

Crystal Singing bowls don't have a long history. It was originated just before 20th century which is made up of almost 99% silica sand. This bowl became famous only in the late 20th century with the increase in usage in most of the healing and therapeutic environments. Majorly the bowls are white in color but some are colored in different colors. The shape of the crystal singing bowls is similar to Thadobati singing bowls. These singing bowls are of different types- frosted, clear crystal, and handler singing bowls- which are easily available in the market.

Old singing bowls

Apart from these singing bowls, there are old singing bowls as well. These bowls are merely old brass and bronze bowls which were manufactured in the earlier periods. These bowls have better sound than newly manufactured ones but can't be compared with the antique ones.

In the present situation, all the above-mentioned singing bowls are used for healing and therapeutic settings by the professionals. This is mainly because of unavailability of antique ones and production of the quality bowls. Also, we can find these bowls easily on the market, whether it's online antique singing bowls gallery or the physical one.
